CAPSS - Community Action Plan for Seismic Safety

San Francisco is working on a Seismic Safety retrofit program, intended to strengthen buildings known to be at risk of collapse during an earthquake.  Mayor Newsom has given instructions to the project team to put forward recommendations for protecting the kinds of structures that failed during the 1989 Loma Prieta quake.  These have been identified as 3+ story, 5+ unit, soft-story wood-frame buildings.  This type of building has an open ground floor plan housing a store or garages.  The city estimates that upwards of 58,000 residents live in this type of structure.  CAPSS has done an engineering study and is finalizing recommendations for the Mayor to enact.

The San Francisco Chronicle has done a good story on this, and can be viewed here.

The San Francisco Examiner has done a similar story which can be viewed here

The CAPSS website is here.
